Growth & History

Alton Physical Therapy is a privately owned, freestanding company founded by Bill Nash, P.T., in 1982.

Our roots in the community run deep. Current owner Steve Schwegel, P.T., first came to Alton Physical Therapy as a patient in 1983. He joined the company in 1986, began working as a therapist in 1990, and became the owner in 2010. What began as a single clinic has continued to grow alongside the communities we serve. Today, Alton Physical Therapy is proud to have more than 90 employees across 10 locations throughout the Illinois Metro East.

Our main clinic in Alton is led by Clinic Director LeAnne Bonnell, D.P.T. In addition to a dedicated team of therapists, the Alton location offers a true aquatic therapy program with a therapeutic pool featuring an underwater treadmill and a temperature maintained at 93 degrees.

In Jerseyville, Clinic Director Deb Wittman, P.T., and her team care for patients from Jerseyville and surrounding communities, including Brighton, Calhoun, and Carrollton. Located at the Wellness Center, part of Jersey Community Hospital, the clinic features a heated therapeutic pool and provides patients with access to equipment within the Wellness Center.

Amanda Hessel, D.P.T., Director, and Janelle Franke, P.T.A., Assistant Director leads our Staunton clinic is part of Community Hospital of Staunton. Together with their team, they serve patients from Staunton and neighboring communities such as Bunker Hill, Gillespie, Mount Olive, Benld, and Litchfield.

Our Litchfield clinic, located within HSHS St. Francis Hospital, is led by Laura Peterson, D.P.T. The clinic allows us to continue providing personalized care close to home for patients in Litchfield and the surrounding area.

Our Hardin clinic is led by Abby Baalman, D.P.T. This location allows Alton Physical Therapy to bring personalized, one-on-one care closer to patients and families throughout Hardin and the surrounding communities.

Jennifer Flick, D.P.T. leads the Columbia clinic. Through our presence in Columbia, we are proud to extend the same patient-focused approach that has been at the heart of Alton Physical Therapy since our beginning.

In Godfrey, our location at Asbury Village is led by Sarah Siemer, D.P.T. This clinic gives us another opportunity to provide convenient, individualized physical therapy services to patients in Godfrey and the surrounding area.

Our newest chapter of growth comes through our partnership with Anderson Hospital. Through this partnership, Alton Physical Therapy now includes locations in Highland, Edwardsville, and Maryville, allowing our team to serve even more patients throughout the Metro East.

Although Alton Physical Therapy has grown considerably since 1982, our approach to patient care has remained personal. Across our 10 locations, our team brings experience in aquatic therapy, Graston Technique®, dry needling, vestibular rehabilitation, women’s health, post-surgical rehabilitation, and many other areas of physical therapy.

Most importantly, we believe physical therapy should never feel like a one-size-fits-all experience. Our licensed physical therapists and physical therapist assistants take the time to understand each patient’s needs, goals, and challenges. More than four decades after opening our doors, we remain committed to helping our neighbors move better, feel stronger, and get back to the lives they enjoy.

New patients can schedule their first visit within 1-2 days of receiving their Physical Therapy order, sometimes even the same day. We also provide Direct Access at our Alton, Columbia, Asbury, and Hardin locations when allowed by the patient’s insurance.
